祭りのとき、祈りのとき

満月の夜、白い息を吐きながらその瞬間をいまかいまかと待つ人々がいる。

一年に一度の祭りのとき、そこでは人々の祈りがある一点に集中する。

ブータンでは毎年、各県で「ツェチュ」と呼ばれる祭が行われる。

ツェチュとは、ブータンに仏教を広めたとされるグル・リンポチェという聖人をお祀りする仮面舞踏の祭り。

祭りが近づくと地域の男女、そして僧侶たちが何度も集まり熱心に練習をし、長い時間をかけてしっかりと準備を行う。

祭りの期間は地域によって異なるが、最低３日、長くて５日ほどだ。

覚えなければならないステップは山ほどある。

当日、祭りに集まった人々を見るとタンスの中の一番高価な衣装を身にまとい、

朝から晩まで仮面舞踊を家族みなで楽しんでいる。

一見同じように見える仮面舞踊だが、全てストーリーがあり、人々はそこから仏教的な道徳心を育んでいくのだと言う。

祭りの最終日は特別な日だ。

日が上らないうちから、多くの人々が集まりはじめる。

彼らが心待ちにするのは、グル・リンポチェが描かれた巨大仏画「トンドル」ご開帳の瞬間。

このトンドルを見ると、今まで犯してしまった罪や今世の様々な苦しみを浄化できると信じられている。

午前３時くらいから地元の僧侶たちと男達がトンドルの準備を始める。

巨大なトンドルを開くためには多くの人手が必要なのだ。

僧侶の掛け声のもと、ゆっくりゆっくりと仏画が開かれる。

やがて、巨大なグル・リンポチェの姿が現れた。

その瞬間会場に集まった人々は一斉に手を合わせ、体全体を使う五体投地でお祈りを始めた。

トンドルに描かれるグル・リンポチェの姿を見て涙する人も。

レンズを通して、そこにいる人の魂が感動に沸き立ち躍動しているのが伝わってくる。

あたたかくて、不思議な一瞬だった。

彼らの奥深くにある、大切な何かに触れることができた気がした。

ブータン人は日頃から祈りの時間を大切にし、目に見えない世界とつながる生き方をしているように見える。

彼らの優しさや謙虚さは、きっとそんな「祈りのとき」からやってきているのではないか。

「祭りのとき」の美しい一瞬は日々彼らが積み重ねている「祈り」があるからこそだ。

A Time for Festival, A Time for Prayers

There are the people who can see their breath under a full moon, while impatiently waiting for a specific moment on which their prayers are focused during their annual festival.

“Tshechu” is a Bhutanese religious festival held annually in each district of the country. It features dances in traditional masks and costumes to honor Guru Rinpoche who is said to have spread Buddhism in Bhutan. As the festival comes close, the locals and the monks often gather together to spend a lot of time in preparation, and once it begins, they enjoy dancing with their families all day long in the masks and apparently finest clothes from their closets. The dances might look similar, however, each one has a different story from which it is said that Bhutanese foster their moral development as Buddhist. The festival lasts three to five days, which differs from district to district.

The final day of the festival is special. Even before break of dawn, many people come together, looking forward to the very moment of the unfurling of the huge Buddhist painting depicting Guru Rinpoche. The Bhutanese believe that by observing the painting, they can wash away their sins and suffering in this world. From around three in the morning, the local men and the monks start the preparation. It requires the help of many people to unfurl the giant painting. It starts with the yells of encouragement by the monks to lift the curtain. It is raised very slowly. ...And the huge figure of Guru Rinpoche has emerged gradually.

At the moment of unfurling, those who gathered at the venue in all joined their hands together in prayers and started Wutitoudi, or the Buddhist prostration practice of throwing down the whole body over and over again. Some brought tears into their eyes looking at the painting. Through my lens, I felt the souls of the people were excited and vitalized with joy. It was a warm and mystical moment, which I think I was able to touch something important deep inside of them.

For me, the Bhutanese appear to cherish their time for prayers on a daily basis, which might make their ways of living connect to the invisible world. I suppose their kindness and modesty probably come from such time for prayers and it can be their prayers accumulated over time that create the beautiful moment during the festival.
